If You Are a Grantmaker, Read This

Last week, Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO) released a letter to philanthropy. We Are In This Together: A Letter to Philanthropy highlights the grantmaking practices that are core and essential to grantees’ work and offers clear steps for grantmakers to continue making meaningful progress in serving them.

I applaud the authors and the suggestions that are made. They are a good step in the right direction. But as I sit here on this day where, “Me, too” is continuously scrolling on my Facebook feed, and the magnitude of the number of women who have been sexually harassed and/or assaulted continues to grow, I can’t help but ask, “What next?”

Are there grantmakers who are willing to come forward and say, “Yes, we are going to try this,” and then share their experiences – the good and the bad? Will there be an ongoing conversation? Will there be white papers and webinars and panel discussions about what worked and how to scale it? Will we hear both perspectives – the grantmaker and the grantee?

Let’s do this. Let’s be bold. Let’s implement the tactics. Let’s be vulnerable and share our lessons with the world. If you’re ready, let me know.
